Must Haves for Breast Surgery Recovery
Nearly all cases of breast cancer involve some form of surgery (and often multiple surgeries), including lumpectomy, mastectomy, double mastectomy, and reconstruction. While I chose to get a lumpectomy and later underwent a lymph node biopsy, the following items can be useful to patients who have undergone other types of breast surgery.
Must Haves for Surgery Recovery
Dry Shampoo and Wipes: Many patients are unable to shower (at least their upper half) for a period post-surgery. For dry shampoo, I prefer powder and for wipes, I prefer Honest or Pipette brand wipes as these options are cleaner.
Gel Ice Packs: I kept two in the freezer at all times for easy swap out when one got warm.
Mastectomy Pillows: Definitely my most-used item which I wore around the house, while sleeping, and out and about. Here are some online options: lumpectomy pillow or double mastectomy pillow. My friend’s mom sewed mine for me based off of this pattern.
Seatbelt Pillow: Prevents bumping/discomfort while riding in the car; I still use mine daily as it also helps to protect my port.
Cotton Elastic Wrap: I used this after the “binder” came off to maintain compression and support healing.
Bralette: Some women prefer the compression of sports bras, but as someone with a smaller chest I found bralettes to be more comfortable. True & Co is my all-time favorite bra brand.
Boyfriend Pillow: It was often more comfortable for me to be upright. I often used this pillow while sitting on the couch.
Wedge Pillow: Similar to the boyfriend pillow, a wedge pillow can help you to sleep elevated. Before getting one I would simply stack two pillows. I continued to use the wedge pillow for heartburn/acid reflux during and post chemo.
Tray Table: During recover, I found it more comfortable to eat meals on the couch. This tray table made that easy; it even has a ledge for your book/phone/tablet.
Button Down Pajamas: This is a must-have as you don’t have to lift your arm to put these on/off. I even wore the top to the hospital so that I could change easily after surgery. Target’s Stars Above line is my all-time favorite and often goes on sale. Also linking an Amazon option.
